You have that beautiful rifle you have always wanted but now you have to get to your destination. You can’t just throw it in the backseat wrapped in a towel. You need to case it. When going to the range or your favorite hunting location, there is nothing worse than finding out the hard way you made a bad choice on the gun case. One should carefully consider how you will protect your investment during travel. There are dozens of choices out there but if you want quality, that narrows the field way down. SKB Cases has been making top quality gun and gear cases for over 40 years.
On my last custom build rifle I chose one of SKB’s iSeries long rifle cases; the model 3i-5014-6T-L. The iSeries is constructed of ultra high-strength polypropylene copolymer resin. They are waterproof and dustproof, are submersible and are resistant to corrosion and impact damage. The molded in hinges have stainless steel hinge pins and a patented “trigger release” latching system on its four latches. This case also has snap-down rubber over-molded cushion grip handles on three sides along with in-line skate style wheels on one end making transporting the case a breeze. The iSeries cases feature an automatic ambient pressure equalization valve (MIL-STD-648C) which are especially helpful when flying. All of these features contribute to its tough military grade design.
What I really liked about the case is the fact that it’s a half inch deeper on the inside than their competitor’s models. This is a huge benefit when you’re using an optic with a 56mm objective lens. Without this it is not uncommon to close the lid and find the case bulging out slightly as it is pressing against the optic on the inside. Obviously this is not good for your accuracy! The layered foam design of the iSeries case allowed me to custom trim the middle layer to fit snug and secure around the rifle, not allowing any movement during transportation.
The Guns and Game crew has been using SKB cases for years, both on the shooting ranges and in the field. We have them for 3 Gun competition, handguns, big game rifles and even a 45 pound .50 caliber rifle. After a year of use with the iSeries case traveling from prairie dog shoots to many days at the range, I’m happy to report it’s still working flawlessly.
